New Scoring System Interprets Objective Nasal Measurement Data

Nov 21, 2022

FACT Healthcare Consulting Group, LLC launches the first patent-pending, validated, web-based software to use alongside nasal measurement technologies. It is designed to educate users and enhance artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning capabilities for airway measurements and screening.

The new innovative approach guides the end user through a data-driven algorithm by entering the numeric output from the measurement device and leads them through a series of steps to bring clarity to the current state of airway health in the patient. This easy-to-use software provides information about the nasal measurement and normal parameters from the testing device, what treatment options are available based on the numeric output, and how to partner with other healthcare providers for better care in the diagnosis, treatment options, and clinical protocols of breathing disorders and upper airway resistance.

More than 1.7 billion people across the globe suffer from nasal obstruction and congestion. This is often measured with patient-directed questionnaires during an office or telemedicine visit. Beyond research, objective nasal measurements are becoming a standard of practice in assessing the severity of nasal obstruction, often found in many diseases like allergic rhinitis.

“We have the potential to transform healthcare by deriving new and important insights from the vast amount of global data generated and entered into DAFNE Scoring System© during screenings and the delivery of healthcare. It will allow us to identify new observations or patterns of therapy outcomes based on the objective airway measurements from rhinomanometry, acoustic rhinometry, and peak nasal inspiratory flow (PNIF) meter. The greatest benefit for this is learning from real-world experiences based on the statistical analysis of data and expert systems that primarily rely on if-then statements in our algorithm,” said Dr. Karen Parker Davidson, RN, CEO and Founder of FACT Healthcare Consulting Group, LLC, and creator of the DAFNE Score™.

The current technologies in the scoring system provide nasal testing measurements that guide healthcare providers to a better understanding of airway pathologies. However, their use in the clinical setting lacks a level of understanding limited by low familiarity with the output data, further preventing the use of alternative therapies in a population where the medical need has been demonstrated. Here, the DAFNE Score™, defined as a combination of scoring considerations based on airway pressures and mean resistance, mean cross-sectional areas, and volume from the non-invasive test is a validated, and simple alternative to assuming the interpretation of the value can be easily applied in clinical practice. Dr. William Harrell, Jr., Orthodontist, author, and professor at the University of Alabama Birmingham School of Dentistry Orthodontic Department states, “DAFNE Scoring System© is a needed platform that allows me to plug in the test result and current treatment, understand the test interpretation and how well the treatment is working based on improved nasal breathing, and how to collaborate for the best treatment outcomes when using rhinomanometry and PNIF in my practice. It’s like a year-long course that teaches me how to interpret the data from the nasal measurement technologies.”

The DAFNE Scoring System© was created in conjunction with Levitate Creative as a predictive score of progression in disease to the level of obstructive sleep apneas and airway and breathing complications based on previous research reviewed by a meta-analysis. “It is a privilege to be part of a project in an emerging field where we can see a huge impact in understanding how airway measurement interpretations help professionals make more informed decisions throughout the patient treatment process,” said Justin Collins, Founder and Creative Director of Levitate Creative.
